This unit provides you with an introduction to World Issues and Geography. The focus will be on geographic thinking concepts and geographic perspectives as we investigate issues that arise from a global commons on a finite planet. The different ways we classify the world will help you to understand the importance of location in making sense of the world in which we live. Your summative task will consist of creating an “elevator pitch” of an environmental issue.
In Unit 2, we start to concentrate on specific world issues that affect many countries. We focus on population issues and examine areas of the world that are growing too quickly, areas that are at risk and areas experiencing population decline. We will look at government response to these issues and ask ourselves if a government has the right to regulate the size of a population through its policy. The focus will then shift to globalization: free trade; protectionism; and the role multinational corporations play in the political, economic, environmental and social characteristics of a country. You will create a “Google My Map” and a summary of the impact multinational corporations have on country for your summative task. Additionally, the final culminating task for this course will be a position paper and in this unit you will complete an annotated bibliography.
The focus of Unit 3 will be Africa and the many issues facing this continent. There are many inequalities between and within countries in Africa and we will investigate who bares the responsibility of these inequalities. This unit will look at genocides that have occurred, as well as human rights abuses. Health and food security will also be examined as these are pressing issues in many African countries. The summative task focuses on what life would be like for someone living in an African country. You will create an infographic and written analysis illustrating demographic, political, economic, social, environmental, human rights and food security for an African country of your choice.
In Unit 4 we continue to examine global issues with a focus on environmental sustainability. We begin the unit by examining how our choices affect people living in LEDC countries. The focus then shifts to water issues and the greatest challenge to achieving global water security. Moving on to immigration we explore whether a country should limit the number of refugees and immigrants they are willing to take in. The implications to refugees and immigrants when countries close their borders are also a focus of this unit. The emphasis then shifts to sustainability and its importance. The sacrifices people need to make to ensure sustainability, as well as examples of changes that would increase sustainability are investigated. These investigations will lead to the summative task for the unit where we look at how we can make consumer projects more sustainable. You will develop a magazine or newspaper page that looks at the environmental and social impacts (positive and negative) of the production, consumption and/or disposal of the product. As well you will look at ways in which the product could be manufactured while considering environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The focus of this unit is the position paper. You will have chosen a topic previously and you have already started collecting resources and evidence (information) in units 1-4. In this task you will tie all the elements together and complete your position paper. Your teacher will be available to give you feedback and assistance as you work towards a finished “good copy” of your paper.
