Background: Nelson Mandela became involved in the African National Congress in 1942 and began to work as an anti-apartheid activist. These activists utilized boycotts, civil disobedience, and non-cooperation to further their cause. Mandela was arrested in 1961 as a result of a three-day worker's strike that he had organized, but while in prison was sentenced to life in prison for other crimes, including sabotage.

Background: As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai, defied the Taliban to become a vocal advocate for the right of females to receive a formal education in Pakistan. Because of the attention that her activism was garnering, she was targeted and shot one day while traveling home from school, but survived. She later became the youngest person to win a Nobel Prize for her work.
