Now that you have an understanding of the expectations that relate to workplace confidentiality, ethics in the workplace, harassment, and workplace equity, you will be prepared for a positive experience; you can work as a team player. However, if you experience harassment, inequity, or observe questionable workplace ethics or breach of confidentiality, there are things you can do.
- Equity in the workplace
- If you receive unequal treatment and/or you are not hired because of your age, race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnic background, or religion, contact the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
- Harassment
- If you experience harassment at the workplace, you must document each occurrence or event; inform the person doing the harassing that his/her actions are not welcome; speak to the employer or supervisor. If nothing gets done, contact the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
- Workplace ethics
- If you believe another employee’s ethics are in question, or if their lack of respect is negatively affecting you, it is important to speak with your supervisor or employer.
- Confidentiality in the workplace.
- If you are told private matters by other employees or hear workplace gossip, do not repeat it. Never engage in conversations that involve negative talk in the workplace. If you believe workplace confidentiality is being compromised and that you are being affected, speak to you supervisor or union representative.
