Parts of News Report

Headline

The headline summarizes the story. Font is usually large and bold to catch reader’s attention

Photograph

A photograph helps to tell the story by illustrating some aspect of the report. 

Caption

A caption explains what the photo is showing and also credits the photographer.

Byline

The byline tells the reader who wrote the article and may also identify the organization the reporter works for. 

Dateline

The dateline tells the reader when the article was published.

Placeline

The placeline tells the reader where the story originated from.

Lead

The important first sentence or paragraph that summarizes the story and answers as many as possible of the 5 Ws (Who? What? Where? When? and Why?) and H (How?).

Body

The rest of the news report provides additional details about the 5 Ws and H, organized from most important to least important detail. Paragraphs are usually very short-often only one sentence.

Direct Quotation

The exact words someone uses. Quotation marks are always used. They are included to give the reader the viewpoint of someone involved in the story.
