What can we learn about a healthy lifestyle through reading and writing? In this unit you’ll learn about what it means to be healthy by reading a variety of texts including websites, news reports, and instructions. You’ll express what you’ve learned in an information paragraph, a revised set of instructions, and a news report.

Unit 2: Know the Signs

Overview

What messages are we being sent about ourselves through the media? How do we take advantage of benefits while reducing the risks of online communication and while interacting with others through social media? Through a variety of media, including social media texts and advertisements, you will investigate the benefits and risks of social media and analyze the messages we see in the media every day.

Unit 3: Under the Influence

Overview

How do people use storytelling to communicate the importance of choices and consequences of substance use, addictions and other related behaviours?

Unit 4: Can You Relate?

Overview

How do people use their voices to communicate their challenges and triumphs with the world? This unit focuses on oral communication and listening skills. You will apply a variety of listening strategies while learning about topics like consent, sexual health, and healthy relationships. Then you will use vocal strategies to share your own ideas.

Unit 5: Call to Action

Overview

What is your message to the world? In the culminating task for this course, you will share what you think are the most important ideas from each unit through various writing and oral communication tasks. You will also reflect on your growth as a reader, writer and speaker and have a chance to demonstrate your learning in a digital portfolio.
