Unit 1: What do Games Mean to Us?

Overview

In this unit, you will develop your listening and speaking skills as you learn about games. You will learn about some of the hero’s journey and character types and listen to an oral retelling of a story. You will consider some controversial issues in gaming and create a video where you express your opinion and reflect on your listening and speaking skills.

Unit 2: How do games tell stories?

Overview

In this unit, you will develop your reading skills by learning how to read a variety of different types of texts including graphic texts, novels, and non-fiction texts. Then, you’ll learn some new strategies to apply to non-fiction texts and apply these skills as you read a video game review. In the final activity for the unit, you will extend your understanding of one of the texts in the format of your choice.

Unit 3: How do games impact us?

Overview

In this unit, you will develop your reading skills by learning how to read a variety of different types of texts including graphic texts, novels, and non-fiction texts. You will write a paragraph narrating the action of part of a graphic novel, and learn how movies are similar to graphic novels. In the final activity for the unit, you will extend your understanding of one of the texts in the format of your choice.

Unit 4: Putting the Pieces in Play

Overview

In this unit, you will investigate the video game industry. You’ll start by learning how to read graphs. Then you will apply this knowledge to learn about the video game industry in Canada. You will create a flowchart illustrating the career path of your choice. In the final activity of the unit, you will consider why achievement systems in video games are motivating, and you will design your own system of badges.

Unit 5: How can I pitch my idea?

Overview

This unit is the culminating task for this course. In this unit, you will use what you’ve learned throughout the course to create and deliver a pitch for a group of investors or game developers. You will also reflect on the skills you learned throughout the course.
