Do you have a plan for after high school?
How did you or how will you decide which post-secondary option is right for you?
What school will you attend?
What program will you take?
How will you take your next steps forward?
If you are finding it difficult to choose a career path or post-secondary option, speak to your guidance counsellor or a teacher.
Explore the Government of Canada website for education planning website. This site provides information and resources for planning your route through the various pathways available to students wishing to study in Canada.
Are you left with more questions than answers? Write them down in your journal and reach out to your school counsellor, your teacher, an adult who is currently working in the field of your choice or contact the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities website. Some of these questions are directly addressed in this activity.
Your future training and education can open doors to better jobs, higher pay and exciting careers. There is a lot of information and many options, which can get a bit overwhelming. Slow down and take it one step at a time. Start a plan for your appropriate pathway by first choosing a career or an area of interest you want to develop (or investigate) further.
So far in this course you have evaluated and determined your skills, interests and even explored occupations that you might consider based on your skills and interests in Activity 1 of this Unit.
Choose one career pathway that you would like to explore, and create a plan by going through the steps below. You can complete this activity as many times as you want on your own for all the different career options you are considering.
For each step, you will be provided with a link, but it will be up to you to explore what is available to you.
The first thing you need to do is create a T-chart or open an app where you can take detailed notes for yourself.
You should have:
How does your plan look? Do you feel ready to begin the process of finding post-secondary programming or options? If you are not, what is standing in your way? Who can you discuss these barriers with? If you are happy with it, identify your next step in reaching the goal.
You owe yourself a plan to chart your future goals. Having a plan will keep you motivated, focused and engaged in reaching your destination (hopefully, the career of your choice).
Create a pathway for the career of greatest interest to you on MyBluePrint, Career Cruising or any alternate career program of your choice. Your T-chart from the previous task can help you create your career path. Your pathway should connect to your personal goals for lifelong learning.
