Gavin and Giftedness

Gavin is 7 years old, and is the third child in his family. He has two older brothers. Gavin’s parents separated when he was just two years old, so he spent weekends with his dad and the weekdays with his mom. Gavin’s mom started to notice early on that Gavin was getting in trouble at school a lot. She got letters home saying that he often falls asleep in class, and doesn’t listen to the teacher. Gavin’s mom spent lots of time talking with Gavin and his teacher about what was happening. After some additional testing, it was determined that Gavin was intellectually gifted. He was falling asleep in class because he was not being challenged. After discussions with the school, the parents, and Gavin, it was decided that Gavin would transfer schools to attend a gifted program. While Gavin was scared initially, both his parents spent extra time encouraging him to try his best and talk about his feelings. Gavin is now excelling in school and is excited to try new things.
