Prejudice: Preconceptions, attitudes, and/or opinions that are held by a person about a particular group that tend to criticize that group, despite the fact that she/he has no sound or real reason to do so.

Discrimination:  Unfair or prejudicial treatment of individuals or groups on the basis of grounds set out in the Ontario Human Rights Code (e.g., race, sexual orientation, disability) or on the basis of other factors.

Ethnicity: The shared national, ethnocultural, racial, linguistic, and/or religious heritage or background of a group of people, whether or not they live in their country of origin.

Sexual Orientation: A person’s sense of sexual attraction to people of the same sex, the opposite sex, or both sexes.

Diversity: The presence of a wide range of human qualities and attributes within a group, organization, or society. This includes, but isn’t limited to: ancestry, culture, ethnicity, gender identity, language, physical and intellectual ability, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Stereotypes: Judgments that are made on the basis of exaggerated or distorted characteristics about groups of people applied to an individual associated with that group.

Bias: An opinion, preference, prejudice, or inclination that limits an individual’s or group’s ability to make fair, objective, or accurate judgements.

Equity: The quality of being fair and impartial.

Equality: The state of being equal, especially in issues such as status, rights, and opportunities.

Social Justice: The fair and proper administration of laws, which means that all persons, regardless of their ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion, etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice.
