DESCRIPTION OF INTERACTIVE
In this interactive, 100 figures are represented with different colours. 20 of them are blue. 25 are purple, 15 are orange, 10 are green, 30 are turquoise. The colours are randomly distributed throughout the rows of people, there are 20 rows of 5 people.
Students select a sampling method or Freestyle. There is a bubble on the side to represent the sample. In all cases it will be 20 people of the 100. It starts with 20 empty slots.
- Random Sampling: A random number generator between 1 and 100 pops up on the screen. Students randomly generate numbers, one at a time, until they have 20.
- Systematic Sample: A random number generator between 1 and 5 pops up on the screen. Students put that person into the bubble. Then take every 5th person, by counting to 5 starting with the first person after the last person they took.
- Stratified Sample: There appears 5 new bubbles on the screen for students to move the figures from each colour into. For each colour, there is a number on each blank slot that the figures get moved into. For each colour, a random number generator shows up on the screen (5 total between 1 and the total in that colour). Students will take 20% from each group, one at a time, by using the random number generator (4 blue, 5 purple, 3 orange, 2 green, 6 turquoise).
- Cluster Sample: A number shows up for each of the 20 rows. A random number is generated between 1 and 20 and students will take the entire row that comes up until they have the full sample (4 times).
- Multi-Stage Sample: A number shows up for each of the 20 rows. 10 random numbers are generated between 1 and 20, It would be good if the number didn't come up more than once or came out after it was drawn. 2 numbers between 1 and 5 are generated. Those two people are taken from each of the 10 rows.
- Convenience Sample: The students drag and drop 20 people into the bubble as fast as they can. It would be cool if they could draw a rectangle around people, and then take all those selected and draw and drop them. Put a timer on the screen so students will try to grab 20 the fastest they can.
- Voluntary Sample: Highlight 20 of the blue and purple ones that the student then has to take into their sample because they can't click on the others.
