Researching Moving Truck Capacity

There are many different sizes of trucks available for rental. They are usually identified by their length, but that doesn’t tell you how much they can hold. How much they can hold is their capacity or volume.

Now that you have information about the capacity of different sizes of trucks, it is time to gather the information about what size truck you need. Let’s catch up with Anita and see what progress she has made.

Anita created a spreadsheet to calculate and store the volume of her furniture. You can see her spreadsheet and see how she recorded her values.

Calculating Capacity

1. Find a tape measure or ruler that is marked in inches as your measuring tool.
2. Locate the six pieces of furniture from Anita’s list [mattress (any size), box spring (any size), headboard (any size), dresser, chair, shelving unit] somewhere in your house. (If you do not have an item, you will record it as 0.)
3. Use your measuring tool to measure the six pieces of furniture.
4. Download and complete this spreadsheet template to record your measurements.
5. For each item, enter the number of them you would be moving. If you do not have this item in your belongings, place a "0" in the column "Number of items."
6. Make a list of everything else you would want to bring with you (books, games, clothes, musical instruments, dishes, cookware, ...).
7. Estimate how many standard moving boxes you would need to pack these items. Remember that a standard cardboard moving box is 16 inches by 12 inches by 10 inches. (If an item is too large for a box, leave it off the list for now.)
8. Enter the number of boxes you will need in the appropriate place in the spreadsheet.
9. Save your completed spreadsheet.

Moving day can be a very exciting time, but there are quite a few things that need to be taken care of before that actual move takes place. The list below includes some of things that need to be considered or done before a big move:

• Start researching moving expenses
• Budget for moving expenses
• Arrange for insurance for your new home
• Order boxes (if needed)
• Begin packing items you won’t be using before you move
• Finish packing
• Decide on your moving date
• File a change of address with Canada Post
• Reserve your moving truck
• Arrange for the setting up of utility services for your new home, as needed (electricity, water, gas, telephone, internet, cable)
• Make travel arrangements for your pets
• Notify all your professional service-providers (doctor, dentist, bank, insurance company, credit cards, school) of your change of address
• Change the address or cancel any subscriptions (magazines, Netflix, newspapers, etc.)
• Confirm parking for your moving truck
• Check that large items can make it up the stairs (if necessary)
• Book elevators (if necessary)
• Use up your food and get rid of your garbage
• Notify friends and family of your new address
• Measure furniture and doorways to determine if larger pieces will fit through the door
• Make a list of items you will need to purchase after you move
