A few years ago, the CBC’s News site had the following headline:
The accompanying article described the findings of an investigative report done for the CBC TV show Marketplace. The show was broadcast on TV, and was later posted on YouTube.
On YouTube, this episode of Marketplace had almost 500,000 online views and this does not include the number of people who watched in when it was shown on TV.
Obviously, a lot of people are very interested in the topic of the show: problems with moving companies.
In this Think, Write, Share, there are three sections. In each section, you will get information about images. Read the information and the questions. Examine the images. Then think about your answer to the questions. Write your thoughts into your notebook.
The following graph is from the site that has the Marketplace episode video.
It shows the cumulative data about the number of views of the episode from April 2015 to July 2016. Use this graph to describe how the number of views is changing during that time.
What information do you get from the graph?
This graph was retrieved from the Statistics section of the YouTube video.
This graph is also from the site that has the Marketplace episode video. It was made with the same data as the previous graph.
This graph shows a very different picture of the same data. The difference is that this graph shows the daily statistics about the number of views of the episode from April 2015 to July 2016.
Describe how the number of views is changing during that time.
This graph was retrieved from the Statistics section of the YouTube video.
These are the same two graphs you saw before. Looking at them side-by-side, think about why someone would want to show the first graph rather than the second graph. What point of view or purpose might they have?
These graphs were retrieved from the Statistics section of the YouTube video.

There are many different sizes of trucks available for rental. They are usually identified by their length, but that doesn’t tell you how much they can hold. How much they can hold is their capacity or volume.
You can read more about truck size at the Uhual.com
Any car or truck rental business may have this information, but some give the truck’s capacity based on weight (payload). This works well for businesses that are shipping cartons or crates of products, since these are shipped by weight. The unit of measure you’ll see is kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs). However, when you are moving from one home to another, you do not know the weight of your stuff, and you really have no way of estimating that. However, you can estimate the volume. You have found the information you need about the truck if you see cubic feet (ft3) or cubic metres (m3) as the unit of measure.
Search for the capacities (or volumes) of three or four different sizes of rental moving truck capacities.
Use the internet to search for the capacities (or volumes) of three or four different sizes of rental moving truck capacities. Take a look at more than one(1) truck rental companies.
Now that you have information about the capacity of different sizes of trucks, it is time to gather the information about what size truck you need. Let’s catch up with Anita and see what progress she has made.
Read Anita's most current blog post.
Anita created a spreadsheet to calculate and store the volume of her furniture. You can see her spreadsheet and see how she recorded her values.
Look back at your search of different moving truck capacities. Compare these with the total volume you need to move your own items from your spreadsheet. Which size is that right size moving truck for you?
Write down the size of moving truck you would need in your notebook. Include your thinking about why you chose this size.
Save your spreadsheet and your decision about what moving truck you should rent.
