Question

Owners of two different cars reported the following fuel usage for their cars:

A Roadrunner used 65 L of gas to travel 600 km.

A Pathfinder used 35 L to travel 300 km.

Which car has the better fuel efficiency?

Answer

The Roadrunner used 65 L to travel 600 km.

The Pathfinder, which used 35 L to travel 300 km, would use 70 L to travel 600 km, assuming the same rate.

The Roadrunner used less gas to travel the same distance of 600 km.

Notice: A unit rate with a second term of 1L or 1 km was not used in this strategy. Comparing the amount of gas used to travel 600 km for each car was an equally valuable strategy.
