Part 1: Telling My Story: The Evolution of my Participation in Physical Activity/Sport.

Create a personal history of your involvement in all forms of physical activity from the age of approximately five (5) until your most recent birthday. These forms may range from formal, organized competitive sports and dance through to (physical) games that your extended family and/or friends played on weekends and holidays; from pick-up games and intramural sports to individual leisure activities, ski trips and hikes; from formal lessons and classes providing instruction in all types of physical activities to self-taught involvement; and from active transportation to dancing at a wedding.

To gather your information for your personal history consider interviewing family members, friends, teammates, coaches, or any other person who may be able to shed light on the various activities in which you participated. Consult diaries, family photo albums, school archives, videos, iPhoto, or any other forms of digital storage or archiving that may include evidence of your participation.

As you gather your information, think about how you will present this information in your Sportobiography. You might organize your information using a concept map or a timeline to track your involvement in physical activity throughout your life to the present.

Part 2: Analyzing My Story and Making Connections to Others: The Cultural and Social Factors that Have Influenced My Participation and Reflect the Larger World History

Analyse the development of your participation in physical activity and/or sport, considering the cultural and social factors that influenced your development and participation, and reflect on how your personal journey compares and/or contrasts with that of the larger world history.

Use the following questions as a guide when completing your analysis and making connections to world history:

  1. What key events and trends influenced your decisions and/or those of your family related to your participation in physical activity/ sport?
  2. What specific circumstances and/or factors in your family’s history may have influenced your participation? (e.g., parents' or guardians' involvement or non-involvement in physical activity/sport before you were born, while you were growing up; extended family involvement).
  3. What specific circumstances/factors in your own history may have influenced your participation and what factor was the most influential? (e.g., social class, race/ethnicity, your gender, siblings, family structure, religion, urban, suburban or rural location, ability, etc.).
  4. How has the social role and value of physical activity and sport changed over the course of your life and how has it influenced your participation?
    • How do your personal history and cultural experiences related to physical activity and/or sport compare, contrast, and/or are reflective of the larger world history of the social and cultural evolution of physical activity and sport?
    • Are there parallel events that may have influenced your level of involvement or the level of competitiveness in which you engaged? (e.g., physical activity as a requirement for meeting basic survival needs, sport as military training, athletic competition as an end in itself, physical activity and/or sport as essential to personal fitness and leading a healthy active life).
  5. Considering all relevant social and cultural factors and their evolution, how did these factors enable or hinder your own participation in physical activity/sport?
  6. In what way have individuals, including prominent Canadians, had an impact on your participation in physical activity/sport?
