Ouch! Did you see that?

Injuries that happen during a movement are often easy to observe and diagnose. However, it’s the silent causes of movement-related injuries, often called "repetitive movement injuries," that creep into our lives without us even knowing it, which can have a big impact on our daily activities.

Does this happen to you? Is it happening right now as you are watching this?

Think of an example of a repetitive movement that can cause injury that happens in physical activity/sport and/or everyday life. Have you, or someone you know, ever had an injury from a repetitive movement?

The Articular System

Use the chart you started in Activity 2 to continue to help you organize and record the information that you are gathering. You will need to know the information about joints along with what you have learned about bones and muscles to be successful on the test at the end of this activity.

Long Description

The body has a number of different types of joints, each one designed to accomplish a specific type of movement.

Long Description

Activity: Watch it!

Watch the two videos below to refine your understanding of the articular system in preparation for the "Choose Your Own Adventure" activity and the practice test.

Video: The Articular System

Sometimes, all it takes is a little humour to get your point across.

This video summarizes the different types of joints.

You will create a presentation to describe the function of the skeletal and muscular systems and joint mechanics related to a human movement of your choice.

Use the RAFT chart below to select the Role you will adopt, the Audience to whom you will direct your information, the Format you will use to convey your information and your Topic, which is the movement skill you will describe.

Your presentation must include the following information:

  1. a picture(s) of a movement skill
  2. a description of movement of the major joint involved in the movement skill
  3. a description of the bones and major muscles involved in the joint mechanics
  4. a description of the vulnerability of the joint(s) involved (e.g., muscle imbalances, male/female differences, joint structure, limitations)
  5. a description of current medical procedures for treatment (e.g., physiotherapy, arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, joint replacement) and why they are effective

The following document will help you organize your research.

Role PSK4U1 Student (you) Teammate Coach Fitness Instructor
Audience Physiotherapist Athlete Classmate Client
Format Pecha Kucha Brochure/Pamphlet A Rap or Sportscast Interview video
Topic (skill & joint) Soccer Kick (knee or ankle) Tennis Serve (elbow) Volleyball Spike (shoulder) Choose your own skill and joint

Save your presentation to your Portfolio.
